MANUAL / Editor / Placing assets

Placing assets

Drag assets from the Content panel onto the Viewport or the World panel. A ghost shows where they will land before you let go, and every drop is one undo step.

01

The Content panel

The Content panel shows the project's Content folder: folders on the left, assets as thumbnails or a list on the right, filter chips by type (models, meshes, materials, textures, prefabs, scenes, VFX, audio, animation, scripts, UI) and a search field. Right-click for create, rename, duplicate, delete and import. Ctrl+A selects every item of the folder.

Import models (FBX, glTF, OBJ), textures and HDR images with File › Import. Each asset gets a .kmeta sidecar with its GUID.

02

What a drop creates

AssetResult
MeshAn entity with a Mesh Renderer (and a skeleton and Animator for skinned meshes)
PrefabA prefab instance with its whole tree
VFX effectAn entity with a VFX Effect component playing it
Audio clipAn entity with an Audio Source using the clip
Imported modelThe model's entities, its root at the drop point
MaterialAssigned to the mesh under the cursor (the slot of the part you hit)
Scene, textureNot placed; the hint says why (open the scene, or use the texture in a material)

Add to Scene in an asset's context menu places it in front of the editor camera.

03

Where it lands

  1. On a surface: the cursor hits a mesh or terrain, and the bottom of the asset's bounds rests on that point, upright. Hold Shift to align it to the surface instead.
  2. On the ground: nothing is hit, so it stands on the ground plane (the grid).
  3. In front of the camera: the ray never meets the ground (you look at the sky), so it floats in front of the camera.

Hold Alt to ignore surfaces. With snapping on, the position snaps to the move step. Several assets dropped together stand in a row centred on the cursor.

04

Into the World panel

Drop onto an entity's row to make the new entity its child at the parent's origin (a material dropped on a mesh row replaces every slot). Drop onto empty space to place it like Add to Scene.

Drops edit the scene document only; while Play runs they are refused with a message.
