Download and install
The engine is one zip. Unpack it into a folder and start the editor: the player, the packaging tools, the .NET SDK for C# and this documentation are all inside.

Every version is listed in the release notes, newest first.
What you need
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit.
- A GPU with Vulkan 1.2, descriptor indexing (bindless) and dynamic rendering (Vulkan 1.3 or
VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering). Current drivers for NVIDIA GTX 900 series and newer, AMD GCN and newer and Intel Gen9 and newer qualify. Install the current driver for your GPU; the editor names any missing feature when it starts. - About 2 GB of free disk space for the engine, plus room for your projects.
Nothing else is installed. The .NET SDK that builds your C# scripts and plugins, the shader compiler that turns your material graphs into GPU code (glslc) and the C++ runtime the programs use are part of the download; you do not need the Vulkan SDK. Your system, your PATH and any .NET you already have stay untouched.
Check the download
Each release has three files:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
KroysEngine-<version>-win64.zip | The engine: editor, player, tools, SDKs, templates and documentation |
KroysEngine-<version>-win64.zip.sha256 | The SHA-256 checksum of the zip |
release-notes-<version>.md | What changed in this version |
Check the download before you unpack it: open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and compute the zip's hash. It must equal the SHA-256 on the download page (and in the .sha256 file), letter for letter; if it does not, the download is damaged, so delete it and download it again.
The command prints the hash in capital letters; the comparison ignores case. The release notes list what changed in every version; the same list is CHANGELOG.md inside the zip.
PowerShell
cd $HOME\Downloads (Get-FileHash .\KroysEngine-0.1.0-win64.zip -Algorithm SHA256).Hash
Unpack
Unpack the zip into a folder you can write to, with a short path, for example C:\KroysEngine. The zip holds one folder, KroysEngine-<version>-win64; keep its contents together.
C:\Program Files. The first time a project compiles its C# scripts, the editor builds the scripting API next to itself, and it keeps its window layout there.Unblock-File removes the "downloaded from the internet" mark, so Windows does not ask about every program in the folder. The programs are not signed yet: if Windows SmartScreen still stops KroysEngine.exe, choose More info, then Run anyway.
PowerShell
Unblock-File .\KroysEngine-0.1.0-win64.zip Expand-Archive .\KroysEngine-0.1.0-win64.zip -DestinationPath C:\KroysEngine
Start the editor
Run KroysEngine.exe. The launcher creates a project from a template or opens an existing one; new projects go to Documents\KroysProjects unless you pick another folder. To open a project straight in the editor:
The editor finds everything it needs relative to its own folder: this documentation (Help menu, F1 over a panel), the project templates, the plugin samples and SDKs, the .NET SDK and the shader compiler. Help › About shows the engine version.
Continue with Your first project.
PowerShell
C:\KroysEngine\KroysEngine-0.1.0-win64\KroysEditor.exe --project "C:\Games\MyGame\MyGame.kproject"

Update or remove
Unpack a new version next to the old one; each version is its own folder and your projects live outside it. Open a project with the new editor to move it to the new version, and keep the old folder until you are sure.
Your editor preferences, layouts and caches are in %APPDATA%\KroysEngine. To remove the engine, delete its folder, and that folder too if you want to remove your settings.
Build from source instead
To change the engine itself, build it from source: the same programs, built on your machine.
